Comfort Shield Terry Waterproof Mattress Protector

My kids wet the bed occasionally, so to protect their mattresses I always have a mattress plastic cover on them. For the purpose of this review, I'm going to try the Comfort Shield Terry Waterproof Mattress Protector on my 5 year old's bed. So you can have a visual of what I've been dealing with, with our current mattress covers, I've included a photo of my 8 year old's bed as well.
I used to buy a $5 plastic covers from Walmart. It was pretty good, the plastic was fairly strong but my son said it wasn't comfortable because it felt as if he had construction trash bags under his sheets. I then noticed mattress pads in the dollar store and would stock up on them since they're only $1. But, I realized a super thin plastic cover + tearing in multiple areas + a kid who moves all over the bed = a waste of money. It really adds up when I'm replacing the plastic every few weeks. Not to mention, I never liked the way it sounded under his sheets. So, I was happy to try a Terry Waterproof Mattress Protector.
The mattress pad arrived and as soon as I took it out of the bag I could see a difference compared to the pads we're used to. One side feels like a towel, the other side feels like leggings. Touching it, it sounds like there may be plastic somewhere inside, but I don't see it. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm glad to see that he will be laying on what feels like a terry cloth under his sheets, instead of plastic.

Thoughts while placing it on the mattress (wash before using):
It actually fits like a fitted sheet. Me likey! My 5 year old has a queen size bed. Comparing the way the Comfort Shield pad fits to the dollar store mattress pad, there is an obvious difference. With the plastic pad, even the queen size pad is ill fitting. While the ends of the bed are covered on one side, it leaves only part of the ends on the opposite side covered by plastic (see photos on right). It is stretched out of place and there are also tears on the upper right and at the ends, so there is no way it can grip the mattress to stay in place.
With the Comfort Shield Terry Waterproof Mattress Protector, as I mentioned earlier, one part feels like a towel, the other feels like tights. After I took it out of the packaging and unfolded it, I realized the sides are stretchy and it's only the top that is protected with the terry cloth waterproof cover. Fortunately, I don't allow my kids to eat in their room, so I won't have to worry about anything spilling on the sides of their mattresses (I hope!). It fit my son's bed like a glove. Before unfolding it, I was curious as to how it would protect his mattress, but I could hear a very minor plastic sound. When I say minor, I mean minor (my hubby thinks I have super hearing, lol). As long as my son doesn't feel an uncomfortable plastic material, that's not a big deal.
The waiting game...
My kids haven't had any "accidents" in weeks, thankfully! I'm hoping they don't have any, but I'll be ready with my camera and report back to you with whether or not this mattress protector has done its job! Stay tuned...
Update April 29, 2014...
Unfortunately, it didn't take long before my son wet the bed, but I guess that's good only because I have to see if this product works. It protected the mattress from staining and it kept it dry. The only problem I had was with odor. It did not protect the mattress from having a urine odor, so I had to spray some febreze on the area. The product does work as described, I just wish odor protection was included.
Update February 22, 2015
I like this mattress pad so much I ordered a pair for my other son!
