House-Autry is a popular brand, that I have come to know well since moving to Florida. But, I wasn't aware of the variety of mixes, sauces and batters they have in their product line. I was sent the Hushpuppy mix to try and share my opinion.
Until last year, I never heard of hushpuppy food. It looks like conch fritters and could taste like conch fritters if we added fish. I can't believe my first time trying them would be when I make them myself. But, the process was really easy!
Heat oil in a deep fryer to 375° F.
With your hands, mix the water and hushpuppy mix until it is an even texture.
Wait 5 minutes, then use a teaspoon to drop the batter in the oil.
It should be ready in 3 minutes!
This being my first time making hushpuppies, I was nervous. I was hoping I didn't waste my time or the mix. However, after making the "test" hushpuppy (as seen in the second image of the collage below), I realized it came out great and was simple to make. It took less than 10 minutes to prep before frying, and only 3 minutes in the fryer.
The hushpuppies with onion were delicious. I paired them with cabbage and naked buffalo wings. I plan to make more and include conch or saltfish in the mix to make really simple, yet delicious fritters. This is definitely a must try!
